Clevite® Oil Pump Installation Tips

  • Clean the inside of the pan: Anytime work is performed with the oil pan off, use a suitable solvent to wash the inside of the oil pan to remove any foreign particles that could later jam the oil pump. After you wash the pan with solvent, wash the pan with soapy water, rinse thoroughly and dry.

  • Before installing the screen and pick-up tube: It is highly recommended that you install a NEW screen and pick-up tube with the installation of a new oil pump. If you must use your old screen and/or pick-up tube, do not use any solvents to clean either part. The solvent may be retained in the screen or pick-up tube and cause severe damage upon initial start-up of the engine.

  • Properly install the screen: When installing the screen on your new oil pump, NEVER use a vise to hold the pump during installation. Damage to the oil pockets will occur no matter how gently you may think you are clamping the pump in the vise. By damaging the oil pockets the oil pump may jam or seize during normal operation. Always install a new gasket when applications require them. It is also very important to utilize the correct tools designed to install press-in design screens. Your local tool supplier will have these tools available.

  • Prime the new oil pump: Adequate lubrication at the start-up of a rebuilt engine will prevent damage to engine bearings and other moving parts. Before installing your new oil pump, submerge the pump in clean engine oil, covering the inlet and turn the pump by hand until you see oil flow from the outlet of the pump.

  • Instructions for mounting the oil pump Where required, always use a new gasket to mount the pump to the engine block. Tighten the mounting bolts by hand, making sure that the pump is properly aligned and seated in place. Finally, using the correct specifications, torque the mounting bolts with a suitable torque wrench.

  • Checking for clearances: When installing your new oil pump, check the clearance between the crankshaft counterweights and the pump housing to insure there is no interference. Some engines have a tight clearance and others may have a wider clearance. Turn the crankshaft at least one full revolution by hand to check for interference. After this last check, you will be ready to install the clean oil pan.

  • Install a new oil filter: When you install a new oil pump, you should always install a new oil filter. Debris may become trapped in other areas of the engine block and a new oil filter will catch any of the foreign materials that can damage the engine.
